I used to play with him quite often in the late 90's on club dates. We were playing standard dance and pop tunes. Can you imagine this guy playing "Beat It"? Great human being and player, even in this context, but his dexterity was effected by a stroke he had later in his life.
He took pride in the fact that he raised 5 (?) daughters and put them through school playing music. He died fairly recently. I miss him a lot

I actually had the honor and privilege of studying with this master. He was a great guy and a wonderful human being. He passed in 2004 and is not as well known as he should be in my opinion. (imho for netspeakers) Check the stuff he did with Mingus and others. As the poster conorguil stated. Mr. Perkins is the epitome of an unsung hero. He will be missed. Its sad that this has so little views. Believers and those in the know please spread the word.
Peace
