One of the most common reasons for seeing me in the urgent care is whiplash, a sudden movement of your head forward and backwards such as by getting rearended by another car, or during sports.
There are a number of symptoms that should make you seriously consider seeing your doctor which I review in this video, which i've transcribed at http://www.medhelp.org/blog/enochchoi.php?itemid=143
There's more information from Cleveland Clinic physicians on this good overview:

Whiplash is actually a strain injury and hyperextension.....seek medical advice and be sure to enquire about a compensation claim for whiplash injury

It took three months for me to be pain free. I now pay special attention to my postures--not to let my head slip forward or tilt backward too much when drinking. I still hear the clicking sound in my neck but I don't worry about it if there's no pain. Isometric resistance exercises, esp. chin tucks work well to strengthen the deep muscles and thus relieve the pain.
