Just a short track showing the recording power of the MG166C USB mixing desk. Anyone thinking of buying one of the Yamaha MG series should just go for it, brilliant peice of technology. This is a recording of me playing, recorded with cubase Al4. I recorded the rhythm first and then did the solo over the top.

There will be more coming soon in this quality with my whole band playing, this was really just a test but i thaught, hey what the hell i will put it on youtube to see what people think.
So yea, hold on tight there will be more in the next few weeks :)

Feel free to comment and rate, much appreciated, Sam.

  • Hi,

Thinking of getting this mixer to record live bands. Just a quick question:

Say if you had 3 XLR mics and a guitar plugged in and recorded into Cubase does it just record the output from the stero (ie 1 track) or would it make 4 which you could then edit individually later? Just asking because, as I'm sure you know, a recorded mix will be different from that of a live.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hey, the desk USB function will only enable u to record mutiple inputs in stereo on a single track. Therefore i would suggest doing a quick test recording of a small section of a song before the gig and play it back to make sure the mix is reasonable so u know u get it right first time. I would also suggest not using cubase as it quite honestly sucks. It crashes a lot and when it does work there is always problems in the sound. Acoustica mixcraft is much better and easier.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for your help,

Can you only record stereo or can you choose a group send? If not then I might get a cable or something so then I can set up a different mix.

I'll look into Acoustica mixcraft. One last question! Can you use the mixer as a control surface for Cubase or Pro Tools etc. ie you can change the mixer levels on screen with it? Don't worry if you are unsure, I'll Google around!

    Thanks again

    Kit

  • Without a proper interface (e.g. M-Auidio delta 1010) i think the multi track options are not really achievable as far as i know with this desk. Furthermore i don't think that moving the faders on the desk can link to the actual on screen movement as this is probably not too easy with USB, more of a firwire feature i think. This is a pretty low range model really that is more designed for mixing live shows and the odd bit of live recording as an extra feature. Its still a great desk tho.

    Thanks

  • wow nice n all but how mutch does it cost?

    thats the big question

  • @Kitus57 you would need something with a mackie control, to use it as a control surface, instead of using the mouse to adjust the volumes. look up "macking control pro" or "Bfc2000. "

  • Hello,

I am interested in buying this for my home studio, for recording my drumset mostly, and I have been confused a little.

In the reviews, it says you can record via USB, but it says you can only record 1 stereo channel.

However, I want to do multi-track recordings of my drumset (kick, snare, overheads, toms, all in separate channels), Is that possible with the YAMAHA MG 166C USB?

  • Great, thanks a lot for your help. I'm buying on behalf of my school who need a new desk and therefore want to get the best I can for their budget. Although the sound quality pretty much sold me it (I plugged in some crazy speakers and cranked it up!) it is good to know what else it can do

  • and thats why i aint getting that.....
