This is the Funeral Procession for the late Big Queen Chief Barbara of Yellow Jackets Indian tribe on 7/26/08. The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom around the early to mid 1800's. They have never forgotten this support. The chants that you hear from the Indian in orange are usually stories of the struggles in the neighborhood, violence, poverty, celebration of life or death etc,,. These chants and calls are passed down from generation to generation.

  • Great vid, Onenawlins... There were increasing slave rebellions as the mid 1800's approached. The gov't and slave owners went to the Seminoles and other tribes and begged them to help them control the slaves, and to get involved in slavery themselves, but the Seminoles refused, saying it was wicked for man to own man, and they HELPED the slaves escape instead. Thats why there is all the respect and love.

  • Now that's the way to go when ya go!
