Anchor Distilling, established in 1993, is dedicated to creating very small batches of traditionally distilled spirits of many types and styles, from single malt rye whiskey to distilled dry gin. We also experiment with completely new products from time to time. Our small distillery is located on San Francisco's Potrero Hill, under the same roof as Anchor Brewing Company, brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer since 1896.

This video features brewer/distiller Fritz Maytag, owner and president of San Francisco's Anchor Brewing and Anchor Distilling Companies. He discusses the origins of America's first whiskey as well as Anchor's experiments in the early 1990s with rye malt and American oak barrels, which led to the release of Old Potrero® Single Malt Whiskeys.

Old Potrero® Single Malt Whiskey, 62.3% Alc/Vol (124.6 Proof) and Old Potrero® Straight Rye Whiskey, 45% Alc/vol (90 Proof), are distilled, aged, and bottled by Anchor Distilling Co., San Francisco, CA. Junípero Gin, 49.3% Alc/vol (98.6 Proof), is distilled from 100% grain neutral spirits and bottled by Anchor Distilling Co., San Francisco, CA.

  • THANK YOU for your history lesson. This is something I have been interested in for quite a while.

  • Mr Maytag,is it true that rye wiskey is made with less sugar if no sugar at all,the reason I ask is that I love straight wiskey, but the sugar is bad for me,allmost diabetic, please let me know asap thank you for your product,wiskey1964

  • I had been drinking, or trying to drink, Bud and Coor but I was having no enjoyment then someone gave me an Anchor Steam and my view of beer changed.

I look forward to trying your whiskey. Thank you for this informative video. To your health, and to everyone's health. Cheers.

  • Fine work sir. Keep up the good work, I love your brewery.

  • let it work in the cask-Leave the bung open till it is almost done working-Bottle it that day week it was brewed.

  • Short Beer: Take a large siffer full of bran hops to your taste-boil these 3 hours. Then strain our 30 gall[o]n into a cooler put in 3 gall[o]n molasses while the beer is scalding hot or rather draw the molasses into the cooler. Strain the beer on it while boiling hot, let this stand till it is little more than blood warm. Then put in a quart of ye[a]st if the weather is very cold cover it over with a blank[et]

  • A buddy of mine and I made George Washington's "Short Beer", which is what we imagined the revolutionary army drank as it created what would be the great American Experiment. We unleashed this beast upon an unsuspecting super bowl crowd. 99.9 percent of the brew ended up dumped in the gutter because it was AWFUL, but the experience, the history, and the camaraderie it helped build was priceless.

  • Good little history piece, I thank you for going out on a limb by opening your distillery.

  • Thank you for doing your part to help the coming Rye Resurgence.
