Kiwirail's EO Electric locomotives were the life blood of the Midland line in the South Island hauling coal trains through the steep Otira tunnel. But they were removed from service and left in storage for 12 years. This is the story of their new life helping out the over stretched commuter rail system in Wellington in the North Island.

  • Does anyone know what the awesome background music is called or where it originates from? I've heard it in a couple of places.

  • Its called Trailblazer, was credited at the end of the video.

  • Would you like me to dig out that wee bit of footage and put it on you-tube?

  • Hey that would be great. Always like to see the old Girls in action on the Mainland.

    Thanks

  • Did you ever see them up at Otira? I remember going to have a look at them just before they finished, I think I even took some footage on my old camcorder.

  • Hey, I saw them a couple of times when I was down there in 87 and 91 which is when the photos were taken. Unfortunately I never saw them in action both times they were waiting for their next assignment in Otira yards.

    Thanks.

    Marty

  • Fantastic work Marty. Inventive and creative, I loved it!

  • Wow, fantastic looking loco's, glad they were saved and not scrap'd. Good on you Kewi-Rail.

  • @STNfortyfour the EO should be around for a bit longer, its just to economical for Kiwi Rail to give them the axe...and for them to be de commed again it would have to mean there is electrification all the way to Masterton and Palmie...EO Loco's Service the Wairarapa express trains

  • But whats going to happen to them when there need is no more in Wellington?

Back in to storeage and forgotten about or stripped and sold for scrap.

What is their expected use time in Welly, now the new Matangi's are starting to operate?

  • Beautiful vid mate.

  • Nice to see both the EOs and our old Mk2s in a second life!

  • Maravilhoso o seu video, sou apaixonado por trens, veja o meu video (Trem de Minerios Tres Rios-RJ).Carlos Brasil

  • Very interesting video, bit of a change from banking coal trains to a busy suburban run, just another demonstration of Kiwi ingenuity!

Something that puzzles me is why NZ rail doesn't make more use of electric, it's supposed to be cheap and it's a native source of power, yet it's confined to individual and isolated sections of track.

  • @MartyJM01

Who is the artist? It sounds like Hans Zimmer?
