A wheel came off the right rear of Jeff Andretti car causing him spin 360 degrees hitting the wall violently head-on. Gary Bettenhausen get caught up the accident when he ran into Andretti's bouncing tire debris taking him out. Jeff Andretti broke both his legs similar to Nelson Piquet injuries to his legs. He would comeback and drove next year's race.

  • Isn't Gary Bettenhausen is Tony Bettenhausen son?

  • @AndrewWang1234

Tony Sr (killed in an Indy crash) son, Tony Jr (killed a plane crash) is his brother.

  • Looks like he lost the right rear tire which caused the crash?

  • Yep

  • @xxRACINGAMERICAxx you truly are the classic racer. i agree with what you wrote. i do not race for i am blind but it's all i think and read about. btw where do you race and are you usac or what?

  • @GoldSilverLead

depends on who your talking to. i race wingless sprint cars and those are very dangerous but i do it because its my passion. i know i can die from it and so do they at indy. most of them would probably die to live there passion.

  • @Fekmann This crash took place only 10 years after Gordon Smiley's horrific wreck. That was pretty good safety development over that decade. Obviously, cars are even safer now. Racing is cool, but it certainly isn't worth your life.

  • Mario said Jeff hit at about 47G's which is right below the threshold of internal injuries being done! Mario said he was at the hospital when all this commotion started, and they said another driver got hurt real bad at Indy! Mario didn't know it was his own son until the doctors came in later and told him!

  • Same thing would have happened to Vitor Meira last weekend if it weren't for all the improvements in safety
