DOT's "Don't Be A Jerk" bike safety ad campaign humorously highlights essential dos and don'ts of safe, responsible riding that are crucial to keeping New York City's streets as safe as they can be for everyone using them, including cyclists. The ads convey the need for bicyclists to follow the rules of the road, including always yielding to pedestrians; riding with traffic, not against it; and riding on the street, not on the sidewalks (unless rider is age 12 or younger).
"Don't Be a Jerk" is part of DOT's larger Bike Smart initiative, which includes the Bike Smart Pledge and the "LOOK" ad campaign, designed to educate cyclists and other road users about sharing the streets and roadways safely.
According to DOT's 2010 Sustainable Streets Index, commuter cycling increased 262% in New York City from 2000 to 2010.

Don't be a JERK OFF! In what part of NYC do you find jokers like the guy in this lame video? Can't you be creative & positive in your efforts to educate? As a born & raised New Yorker, I'm pissed off! As a cyclist, I know the laws & as a creative artist, I know crap when I see it! The last thing you do to get a New Yorker's attention is call them a JERK unless you want a fight. Persuade with courtesy & creativity if you want the people's attention! There is nothing funny about traffic safety!

Eh, what's a bike lane? No such thing around here, sorry to say.

You can't blame me for thinking you're the enemy. Give people a heads up next time, for crying out loud.

@logik316 (2) Now, go and ride your training-wheels assisted trycicle in your sissy ghetto bike lane and don't get out until you've got the balls to make yourself respect as a vehicle driver, and really learned how to ride in the streets with the same responsabilities and obligations as any other vehicle would. Because YES, a bicycle is a VEHICLE.

@logik316 (1) Bleh. Probably your peanut sized mind assumed that I'm an "evil and mean" motorist that hates cyclists and that I'd like "them pesky bike-huggers" out of "my" streets. Newsflash honey: I'm an everyday urban cyclist-commuter and my point was that bike lane suck b/c they are destroying urban cycling and perpetuating the hegemony of cars in the public space known as streets.

I say give this guy a break. Judging by the size of his gut and his fat ass, he's just starting out as a bicyclist and simply hasn't learned the rules yet.

Certainly not quite as good as your mother does. I once had her sucking my cock, while I had my bike parked right between her butt-cheeks.

Hey, Mario Batali is not "C" list...he's definitely on top of the foodie movement.
It's great that he took the time to make this PSA; I wonder if he really rides a folder? He really does wear those awful orange-colored scuffs.

funny spot. I just wonder if there was ever such a campaign adressing car-driver-jerks. And thats what upsets me: the absolut number of reckless cardrivers (park on sidewalks and bikelanes, dont stop for pedestrians, run red lights, dont obey speed-limits) are so much higher than the reckless bicyclists. And cars kill so many more people than bikes. So why not adress car-drivers but make bikers appearing as jerks?

@DaringDirk100 In the UK (I guess our roads aren't as wide) I have found the opposite, two way bike lanes tend to send you round the houses more e.g. watch?v=FF_MCgNNU
