(c)1989 Roses/Variety Wholesalers

Combination of two commercials for the Roses discount store that, save for the specific item clips (electronic equipment for the first; fans in the second) are essentially identical.

Roses has a rather unusual history, as it started in 1915 by P.H. Rose as a 5-and-10 (similar to W.T. Grant, Woolworth or Ben Franklin); moved into discounting and had a lot of success into the early 1990s when (much like Kmart nationally and many of the 5-and-dimes like Grants and G.C. Murphy as well as discount stores like White Front and Topps had during Kmart's rise in the 1970s) they were essentially blindsided by the rise of Wal-Mart, ultimately getting bought out by Variety Wholesalers and attempting for more of a "high-end dollar" approach (though the stores are somewhat dirty now).

As for this user, I'm in between two (one in Edenton that has been fairly stable; the other an Elizabeth City location on its 3rd try {first run arrived in Southgate Mall's main anchor store that was originally Grants; that was one of several stores that were closed in 1994 as Wal-Mart causalties; the 2nd was a Roses Express that moved into a JCPenney that moved next door, this attempt is in what was a Mammoth Mart, then a King's Dept. Store, local grocery chain Farm Fresh and Winn-Dixie until their massive 2005 bankruptcy retreat).

  • I used to shop at Roses #436 a lot, and barely remember it's first plaza location, before moving to the old JC Penney space, which was later torn down in 2003 to make room for Home Depot. I miss Rose's and wish they'd come back. They also used to have a store in Newport, where the Tractor Supply Store is now.

  • Thanks for posting these commercials... I was the Sight and Sound Dept Manager at Roses #436 in Morristown, TN back in the late 80's, early 90's.. then assistant manager until 1992... great company to work for!
