awesome idea, what would happen if you replaced the sand with say, a metal cover with a hole? The idea is so the top layer of the saw dust doesnt burn right?

It's nice. But what about the dark side of the moon ? It's smokeless because the sawdust becomes charcoal quickly and when charcoal burns it produces no smoke rather it produces carbon monoxide, a lethal gas, heavier than air, so it seeps out of ash pan and spreads on the floor. Dangerous for pets and humans who can sleep on the carpet. Carbon monoxide is a stealthy killer and so lethal that it can kill you in your sleep without you feeling anything. Charcoal stove is not good in closed doors.

I want one, haven't got a supply of sawdust, but, I want one!!! That is such a brilliant use of sawdust, something that is normally swept up and thrown away every day in many mills and workshops across the country, it's brilliant!!! :D

I am curious as to the BTU capacity of this stove. How many pounds of sawdust go into a loading?

@gfbrant The stove takes about 25 kilograms of fine shavings.

Thanks. This type of stove is not restricted to sawdust, try using very fine paper shreddings from a high security paper shredder.
