I grew up in the NASA family as my dad worked well over 2 decades on the Shuttle's Main Engine program (SSME) for Rockwell/Rocketdyne.

I was going through my Itunes music the day before Discovery's last launch and I ran across this John Williams piece called 'Celebrate Discovery'. It inspired me right away to do a tribute video to this magnificent bird. I downloaded hours of raw NASA video and high quality pics from all corners of the internet. I wanted to get this video finished and posted before she lands for the last time.

Luckily, NASA posted footage of the last launch on their website the day after it happened so the liftoff in the video is indeed the final Discovery launch.

I'm hoping to catch one of the final launches (I've never been) before this great era comes to a close.

If you enjoy this video please comment / vote as that will help others find it easier. I have one more Shuttle tribute video in the works that will blow this one away so make sure you subscribe and you'll get a message when it is complete.

The uploaded version doesn't play nearly as smooth and crisp as the original on my hard-drive. If you use download software and pull the 1080P version to your hard-drive it plays much better.

  • If you like my Discovery tribute you might also like my new vid - it's a high volume 'real-audio' Shuttle launch. There is no music, just the experience of seeing/hearing one of these monsters roar off the pad. You'll need a lot of speaker system to get the effect though.

  • John Williams is the man

  • @Jcsthird

John Williams has inspired more film-makers, authors, dreamers, poets, patriots and everyday people than he will ever know. My hat is off to you Mr. Williams - wherever you are...

  • Thanks Charlie! I'll drop you a line when my new Shuttle vid is done. You'll need a really loud sound system with a good sub though to get the effect.

  • Awesome! 5 out of 5 stars for this video. You definitely beat me with this. I've tried doing this sort of stuff with videos. But, it's hard. Hope you know what I mean by this.

  • @GreshamUnlimited

Thanks Daniel. I'm currently working on a new Shuttle vid that will showcase a high quality 'extreme' audio track of the launch sequence (real-sounds only - no music). Check back soon - it should be up in a week or so!

I spent weeks in every corner of the web - YouTube, NASA, fan-sites - private collections etc. I actually have lots and lots of great and uncommon footage that I just can't squeeze into these 3 minute vids. I plan on doing at least one more Shuttle video to show some of the best orbit footage I have ever seen. Thanks for the great question!
