Ikbal, as always, has forcefully and accurately identified the real problem : an abuse of parliament by Ramgoolam met with the dishonourable silence and tacit complicity of an opposition leader who seems more intent on prolonging his vile courtship of the PM than in dealing honestly with the severe problems facing this country. People should not take sides on this issue when the facts are clear and the implications hugely dangerous for our democracy. Separation of powers is a fundamental aspect of our parliamentary democracy and the legislative, judiciary, and executive should always maintain a sovereign independence from each other. What do we see in this God forsaken land? The head of the legislative, the PM, apparently having a cosy chat with a junior member of the executive(the forensic scientist) about a police investigation in a case of arson/attempted murder on one of the PM's main opponents! Not only Ramgoolam, but Berenger and the speaker also, need to brush up on this basic tenet of parliament democracy: that no politician should ever, ever involve himself with the operational, day to day aspects of the executive. Now, Ramgoolam has confirmed what any sane person always knew was true: that politicians actively involve themselves in police investigations and affect their outcome. No wonder so many thugs are so close to politicians of all parties! The greatest shame ought to be felt by every member of an opposition that sees power as its only raison d'etre and by a speaker who is simply incapable of showing the impartiality and independence that his high office demands. A sad, sad day for democracy... Well done, Ikbal!
