The region around Kandahar city in Afghanistan is the Taliban's birthplace and breeding ground. That makes it a key location in the U.S. military's security efforts. But "securing" a region in which you can hardly distinguish friend from foe is far easier said than done. NPR staff photographer David Gilkey just returned from the region, where he spent time with the 101st Airborne Division. Their mission is two-fold: chase out the Taliban and win the trust of locals — if they can.

Myous, congrats on finding out that the military is socialized. Thats definition of the military, and how it is structured... since the military is socialized, the soldiers duties are obviously to carry their commanders orders. Anyways, I personally believe That fighting a country that killed over 4000 of our civilians in the name of jihad, and has been terrorizing its own people for many years is justified. Maybe we can cut the tax money going towards killing babies, and letting two gay peopl

I've read countless books on war, and this is what they talk about in the middle eastern wars. If their are any democrats, or Europeans, please note that the media you listen to always talks about the civilians that die. Well, here are your "civilians". A bunch of insurgents Throwing away their weapons in the heat of battle, because they know the media will turn it into something explosive.

Aren't you trying to discourage the "freedom" supposely defending by being in Afghanistan.
Just because the military not allow freedom doesn't we civilians can't exercise it. You soldiers are not untouchable from the law or being held responsible for your actions. We
Americans taxpayers foot the bill for your weapons, training, food and healthcare( which we don't have because we spend so much of it on military.) Your duty is not to your commander, or the army, it's to the american taxpayer.

your duty is not to your commander, or army, it's to the americans who pay your taxes. The army is a branch of the government and it is technically socialized. Yes our military is a form of socialism. Just remember people suffer from soldiers and the militaries actions. Especially all the taxpayers money that thrown at it when it could be used for education or the healthcare we desperately need. And that you soldiers get the healthcare free, from our tax dollars.

I'm sorry but it sounded like you were justifying what the Black Hearts just because they were soldiers. And no I the westboro church hate the army because of homosexual not any legitimate reason. I know soldiers who are good men and women though they are a lot that aren't. I hate that soldiers have become untouchable, and we have all their militarism and imperialism shoved down our throats. We the taxpayers have to pay for all the wars. Remember we american taxpapers pay your salary.
