a Proposal of Questions, Methods, and Ideas.
And, our final product may be a narrative film that turns the tables on Youtube, and questions under what circumstances something is deemed "appropriate" or "inappropriate" in our contemporary culture.

  • I feel like porn/bodily exposure is the only thing truly restricted on Youtube. There aren't many restrictions on language (Unforgiveable) or violence (Kimbo Slice) but porn is a no go. Are you planning on looking at the ways youtube's warnings etc. can be so easily circumvented? Anyone can put in a fake birthday.

  • Its really not just porn that is censored. Everything from videos that show text and passages from the Qur'an to videos of children playing, innocently, have been taken down for some reason or another. We are going to analyze why things come down, and why things stay up (most 'obscene' videos stay up because they are usually sexually 'humorous', or if it hate speech, such as Hitler's speeches, it is due to their historical nature)

  • And for the users circumventing restrictions, we meant not just putting a fake birthday, but putting up 'misspelled' tags, and things like that, to circumvent the Youtube policing done by employees

  • Sweet proposal (and very nice video)... Question: Are you all going to look for a certain type of video, like porn, violence, racsim... or are you going to kind of blend them altogether or seperate them or just do one topic...what?

  • When you flag a video, you are given a scroll-down box that lets you choose one of five different reasons for flagging (sexually explicit, mature over 18 content, other terms of use violation, graphic violence, hate speech). we will look at everything except copyright infringement ("other terms of use violation), i believe.

  • Very well designed video and the idea is definitely interesting. I completely agree that censorship occurs for other things besides adult material and it would be interesting to see what the limits of YouTube actually are.

  • Seems like an interesting topic. I find it funny how the terms of conditions exist as a way to govern what material is shown on youtube, but youtube makes it really easy to go around these rules. It was cool to see how no anti-google videoes existed, nice effect. Anyhow, I would definitely like to know the various ways users go around these rules. How will you find out? Will you attempt to go around as well?

  • Great video, it was very well laid out and edited. Also, it seems clear what you are trying to do. Those were great examples of censored videos...How did you get footage of them if they were censored? Secondly, how do you plan on dealing with the inevitable problem of not being able to see videos that are censored, and thus said videos not being accounted for in your project?

  • Although you are excluding users who post copyright material, couldn't it be interesting to find ways that users are breaking this as well?

I for one am interested in how and why people are so fanatical about TV shows that they would go to such lengths so that others could watch the show on Youtube. Maybe this is a better question for the entertainment group but it seems like copyrighted material is pretty easy to find...

  • Nice video. I think that it was important for this "trailer" video to have some form of shock value considering that the topic is censorship. Maybe consider how the censorship on YouTube relates to America's views? How is what YouTube censors a relationship to what America feels is inappropriate?

  • Sound, sorry. I say that I think the experiment seems more exciting as method and that the video you make should push at and represent some of your findings.

  • I just tried to post a link to a video that I find to be offensive (the Saddam Hussein execution video) and my comment was denied posting.
