The video doesn't address weight or price issues. These are the utmost concerns of most cyclists. The fact that one can shift at a standstill is nice. The lack of chainline issues is nice too.
@Johnmorrisbeck If we were dealing with only level surfaces the need for gears would be a mute point. I have my doubts about this system because they aren't revealing enough information for you to make a rational decision on whether or not it works as advertised.
@nourbutwatmi There are three factors which would go into this. 1. The average geared bike is 15% less efficient than a single speed bike in terms of power put in to power used, but this only applies on a perfectly flat terrain; one would need to know how efficient this mechanism is. 2. Lance wears through 1 chain per week during the tour; we need to know how long it takes for this system to wear out under liesure and racing conditions. 3. I don't know how much it weighs, that matters.
The entire mechanism looks massive..and HEAVY. Acceleration, especially up a hill, seems like it would be more difficult when compared to a traditional setup. I don't see this being practical in the road racing world. Even the Rohloff IGH seems like a better idea than this, yet even it isn't being used by any serious pro athletes.
Cool engineering, but probably expensive as hell and again, not practical for anyone looking to be competitive on a bicycle.
@500group Do a little research for your self and you will see that even thought you think you know it all your wrong, this system has no friction pads, it follows all laws of fluid dynamics and uses them to its advantage.
lol, your arguing with the laws of physics not me, you don't understand the basics here,
regular gears have friction but push INTO each other
da vinci uses friction pads that push past each other so they have to be forced together which is enormously inefficient
If they worked properly you would see this everywhere instead of gears yes ? but you dont , see my previous post or bone up on your physics, just wanting something doesnt make it so unfirtunately...

All I want to know is what does Lance think about it...after all he is the best in the world.

@500group It doesn't use friction pads, it uses an elastohydrodynamic fluid. The parts don't even touch.
