  • I forgot since it's been a couple of years. they are indeed stronger than steel, but they have to be manufactured carefully, a little air bubble inside will affect the strength of the material, unlike steel which is easier

  • What the farmyard?

  • From my understanding, the disadvantage is that when CF does break, it pretty much shatters, unlike some types of steel which will deform without completely breaking up. Whether or not this is a problem depends on the application, I suppose.

  • Thanks Dude

  • The guy that oversees the materials lab at my university said that a 1/4 in sheet of carbon fiber (layered) is 7 times stronger than a 1/4 in plate of steel.

I believe this is in tension. I would assume in compression it could be just as strong but probably at least twice the strength of steel in compression.

  • How strong is Carbon Fiber? How many pounds did it take to finally snap it?
