Illinois Jacquet and his band in the "Jive Crazy" scene from the 1949 noir movie "D.O.A." -- at least, according to the movie publicity. However, in fact:

Personnel on camera:
Teddy Buckner (tp), Von Streeter (ts), Ray LaRue (p), Shifty Henry (b), Cake Witchard (dr)

Soundtrack personnel:
Ernie Royal (tp), Maxwell Davis (ts), Ray Turner (p), George Boujie (b), Lee Young (dr)

  • Just cracked this case, Bob. This band, called The Fishermen in "D.O.A." were actually The Wig Popper. James von Sttreeter, sax; Teddy Buckner, trumpet, Shifty Henry, bass; Cake Witchard, drums, and Ray Laurie, piano. Another unnamed band played the music on the soundtrack when The Fishermen's music couldn't be used in the soundtrack. • @rblaustein Just cracked it? If you read my full original 2007 notes (under the clip) you'll see both the soundtrack musicians and the personnel on camera listed there.

  • I know exactly who this is: Jack LaRue Piano, Vaughn Streeter, Tenor, Al "Cake" Wickard, Drums. Shifty Henry Bass. I used to see these guy aound jazz joints in so cal such as Peacock Alley on 8th and Morrie Glick's Melody Club on Slauson.

  • @stevearinoten4 True - but they are not the ones heard on the soundtrack. See my introductory notes.

  • this is NOT illinois jacquet or big jay mcneely... those are both myths... jadie carson is the bandleader.

  • Thanks, but this has already been well discussed in the comments, over a year ago:
