Thursday June 25th was Torture Acountability Action Day sponsored by a coalition of Progressive organizations to call attention to crimes committed by officials of the Bush administration as they implemented their broad and complex plan to initiate their program of extraordianry rendition (kidnapping) and torture. Protesters gathered in Pasadena lead by Jodie Evans of CodePink and Dr. Dennis Loo of the World Can't Wait. On the steps of the 9th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals-Pasadena, they submitted a formal judicial misconduct complaint against 9th Circuit Judge Jay Bybee, former Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel. Bybee violated international law and the Constitution by signing Bush administration memos authorizing torture.

To dramatize the violence ensuing from Bybees alleged criminal action, demonstrators wore orange jumpsuits (like those of Guantanamo Bay detainees), to provide visual reminders of the deplorable actions kept secret from a disapproving American public. In fact, a February USA Today/Gallup poll found that more than 40 percent of Americans agree that Americans who approved of or conducted torture should be prosecuted for their crimes.

  • No one wants or desires to have an abortioin. Individual circumstances vary widely as to why a woman would 'choose' to end a pregnancy. Ending a pregnancy is not murder. If you really want to reduce the numbers of abortions -- then the obvious solution is to work and struggle to assist those women who become pregnant, to 'choose' to go full term.

Loving a fetus and not the baby is a disjointed approach to the problem.

  • The federal government is not accountable to anyone, not those in power at the top. I was forcibly injected by a federal agent and forced medical procedures at a federal facility in April of 2001. I had survived an attempt on my life after FDIC bank examiner employment and investigating the murder labeled suicide of the FDIC regional director in San Francisco. I hope to leave the USA. The regime in power here and elsewhere is the enemy to mankind.

  • Thank you Jodie Evans and Dr. Dennis Loo and all others who participated in this event. I believe anyone who did not have the forethought and conviction to oppose torture when faced with the option is guilty and should be held accountable.

  • Carrib, add that to 1.32 million Iraqis (1/2 of them children) and the hundreds of thousands displace by our intervention in Central and South America in order to exploit resources for profit. Yes, we do not have a great record.

When women's economic conditions and quality of life are better, I guarantee you, abortions will decrease. Until then, it's the law, and I appreciate your right to work to change it.

  • How can we be held in high regard Worldwide when we torture 14 million humans through the procedure of Abortion? It is wrong to make people stand naked and also wrong to rip innocent babies limb for limb just because a woman ..."chooses" to do so.
