This is a tutorial showing you how to make an obsidian maker which doesn't require multiple buckets of lava!!! This method uses redstone wiring as a 'fuel' to produce obsidian rather than constantly having to cart buckets of lava to create obsidian, or pouring water onto underground lava sources!

This still works in 1.1. I don't think it will be fixed in a patch because notch already knew about it.
