@mounorman I disagree. Our culture is obsessed with love and treats it with a heavy, saccharine hand. The movie contains love, respects it, gives it enormous power, but it isn't the theme. If it was, the conquistador would have returned to her, and wouldn't have finished his journey alone. Her love is ulitmately the instrument that brings him to acceptance: the acceptance of death that brings peace and a transcendent understanding. In the end the most powerful message is a simple one.

"Can Entropy be reversed?"
If you are fascinated by the idea of the circle of life, pherhaps even on an stellar or cosmic level, then I strongly recommend reading Isaac Asimov's sci-fi shortstory "The Last Question" about the fate of mankind and the entire universe.
It is the most celebrated work one of the most celebrated sci-fi writers of all time. Takes 10-15 mins to read. Google it. Thumbs if you like :)
In a movie about death, they could not have chosen a better composer. This music illustrates death with a sound of suffering and longing, tremulously but gracefully covered over with quiet dignity and finally, transcendent revelation.
