I'm well aware of how these military dictators, despots, killers are portrayed in both the media and in history text books. Stalin was a brutal dictator, like Hitler.

Stalin sent millions to their death too, as have other despots throughout history, yet we do not see the same movies about them, nor are they despised as Hitler is. Clearly it is not the magnitude of a persons crimes that is important but the emotional manipulation behind how those crimes are presented to the masses that creates the perception of the man. Just as you view suicide as cowardly, other cultures view it as the most honourable act by a person in charge when failure is inevitable.
