Cybotron, not to be confused with the American group, was an electronic/experimental music band from Australia formed in 1975 by Steve Maxwell Von Braund and Geoff Green. The band was formed after the release of Braund's 1975 album, 'Monster Planet' which Green contributed to; along with Gil Matthews (Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs), Henry Vyhnal and Jim Keays (The Masters Apprentices).

Cybotron released a self-titled album in 1976 containing mainly synthesizers and saxophone. Stylistically, Cybotron were similar to their contemporaries; innovative bands such as Ash Ra Tempel, Hawkwind and Tangerine Dream. They were creating minimalist, repetitive electronica at the same time that Kraftwerk released Autobahn. Today their music is still played around the world and is positively received, albeit not commercially recognised.

  • Hey everyone!

I noticed yesterday that Australia's youth, alternate station, Triple J, has listed Cybotron's most popular album, Colossus, on the shortlist of Australia's Top 100 albums.

If you guys could take a little time and head to abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/alltime/11/ and click C and vote 'Cybotron -Colossus', it would mean the world to me and my dad, Geoff Green.

    Cheers guys. Peace. x

  • They were so ahead of their time. Their 80's stuff is the best, timeless yet nostalgic. awesome.

  • @rosieanneliese Their 80's stuff? The band disbanded in 1980; the last album was released in 1980, Implosion ,but did not consist of the classic line-up. Are you sure you are not confused with the US band, Cybotron, which came to prominence in the 80's?

  • My favorite part was the video wobble artifact at 2:03. Having grown up watching VHS bootlegs until they degraded to unviewable noise, that sound is pure magic to my ears.

  • Hmmmm.... I wonder of they ever saw Live At Pompeii?? hehe

  • Wow !!!! can't believe my eyes. I was looking for Cybotron for my facebook group but never imagined to find a video-clip ! I first airplayed them on chilean fm radio back in 1983 and then almost weekly at Futuro Fm. Surely Cybotron has remained a TOP band for me and am glad technology is helping promote this part of the australian music. Chris Neal and Charles Wain (Groover Myers - who scored Peter Weir's THE LAST WAVE) are also among my aussie faves :) 3 thumbs up.
