Steep Scotland (10 mins)
Two ski instructors abandon the Alps to come home to Scotland for the best ski touring in years, seeking out challenging descents in the Cairngorms and on Ben Nevis.

Shown at the 2010 Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival.

Filmed and edited by Blair Aitken. Additional footage thanks to Andy Weir and Michael Jachacy. Featuring Blair Aitken, Andy Freshwater, Tom Hutchison, Dave Anderson, Allan (get in touch if you see this!), Andy Weir and Donnie Hall.

EDINBURGH MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL is an annual event dedicated to the promotion of adventure through films, lectures and exhibitions. The festival aims to entertain, enlighten and inspire. It also offers film-makers the rare opportunity to showcase their exciting work.

NOTES

Here is some missing information about the film, in case anyone wants to ski the terrain:

The first gully is actually called Diagonal Coulior on the Stag Rocks. The shot before Pinnacle Gully is the top of Castlegate not Pinnacle gully, we didn't have time to ski both but they are side by side. We skied both sides of Madubh but the one in the film is heading toward Taillers Burn (although not steep this is probably Scotland's best ski run!). Coire Garblach was actually filmed a different day from the Angel's Peak tour. After skiing Cairn Toul and Angel's Peak we skied one of the northern corries off Brieriach (this isn't in the film but is one of the other Scottish films). Dougie Mill was supposed to be the second ski instructor who came from France but he broke his leg on the first day!

  • The music is just loops and copyright free music I found online. I'm not sure I still have it but I'll take a look.

  • Blair, great stuff, really good to see someone out there and with a sense of the art of it. I presume you've already heard, but the Cairngorm steep skiing season is already upon us, but this time with powder. Skied Jacob's last Thursday, albeit timidly - had wondered if it might release (which it didn't) or if the ice at the chimney section might not have been banked out yet (which it was) - but finally it was just perfect..

    If you're needing a ski-compadre, let me know - I'm Inverness based. P

Just watched the vid. Respect! It looks a lot more knarly at this time of year and the chimney is much more impressive.

I run a ski school in Val d'Isere in the winter so won't be back in Scotland until May (hopefully for some more ski touring).

Have a good season, by the look of it you already are!

    Cheers,

    Blair
