Northern Lights (Golden Compass Deleted Ending Restored)

After 12,000 saw my earlier version, here is my improved offering.

This video has been designed to give an idea of what the true ending to 'The Golden Compass'/'Northern Lights' looks like. Also this being a video of the end of a story, major spoilers are ahead. Do not watch if you've not seen the film or read the book.

This video begins where the film ends. It wraps the whole film up, it explains the intro to the film, Dust, and finishes the first book. The Golden Compass originally ended this way, but test audiences found the ending difficult to swallow. New Line decided to take it out at the last minute. The removal of the ending, mixed with New Line determind to keep the film less than two hours means that at times the theatrical version is just not what it should be. Endless scenes that were filmed, were cut (mainly any that involved character development). To add insult to injury the whole order of events were changed to suit the new 'happy ending'.

This is how the film was supposed to end, and I have to say good ridance to New Line for managing to waste a great opptunity to make one of the most defining movies of our time. Internationally the film was a huge success, but it's now looking unlikely that we'll ever see the sequels due to poor takings in America.

Hope still remains that we'll recieve a directors cut. However it's looking like that's going to be down to the dedication of the fans. Either way, I hope this video kind of pieces together what should of happened. There are clips from trailers, the game, and a preproduction video to walk you through what we know the ending is kind of like. I hope you enjoy :)

@nathmull1997 I think I understand your comment... the clip with lyra riding Iorek? The same clip is in the movie, but the version I show is a clip from an earlier version of the movie. In the version I found there is the Northern Lights in the sky. I did not edit or create the clip, it really is from an earlier version of the film. Also check the 2011 version of this video... its better :)

I think there may be only one problem with this, and it's that the subtitles went by too fast for me to both read them and look up to see what was happening. Otherwise, amazing.

They should have not tried to make it into a tries-to-be-fantasy steampunk and instead have gone right for the unique, alternative steampunk/science-fiction edge the books had, which also were more cruel. They should have made a film that stars a child, not a film for children. The death of Roger and the fate of the kids who had been ripped apart from their daemons was horrible in many emotional ways, and this film seemed for me like they were toning it down in a way that was almost offensive.

Thank you. Three professional, film school-taught editors couldn't figure out what they had, and you did it with the clips you found yourself and a video editor likely comes standard on most computers or can easily be bought at Best Buy. This would have been a great ending, and the suits at New Line butchered it entirely.

you would think the studio that adapted lord of the rings would know better than to try to dumb his dark materials down, maybe if they hadn't this would hvae turned out like lord of the rings did
