The Shadow came to network airwaves on September 26, 1937, over the Mutual Broadcasting System, with 22-year-old Orson Welles starring as Lamont Cranston, a "wealthy young man about town." Once The Shadow joined Mutual as a half-hour series on Sunday evenings, the program did not leave the air until December 26, 1954.

The famous catch phrase,"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" was accompanied by the strains of an excerpt from Opus 31 of the Camille Saint-Saëns classical composition, Le Rouet d'Omphale.

  • When I was a preschooler, my neighbors had a pet deer named Shadow, whom I had mixed feelings about. 1) nothing called a "dee(a)r" could be all bad, but there was the issue of having the name of that scary radio character.

  • WHY DID I NEVER REALIZE THAT WAS ORSON WELLES?! Holy shit.

I'm only 23, but my mom had a bunch of these on tape and we always used to listen to them. I loved them. But damn, I had no idea. Life is awesome.

  • awww playin on a poor guy's situation; kudos to uploading these

    wow what a rare find

  • Frank Readick's transcribed introduction was used because Orson couldn't quite master the sinister laugh required of "The Shadow". During the first few seasons, the program was heard on Sunday afternoons at 5:30pm(et). By the end of World War II (when Bret Morrison assumed the role), it moved up a half-hour to 5pm, and stayed there until the end, in 1954. "Blue Coal" was the primary sponsor on the East Coast, where it was marketed; other sponsors sustained it in different regions of the U.S.

  • Can you repost this with script? Sorry, but my hearing is not so good as it used to be.

  • I could use a Lamont Cranston right now. So much evil lurks in the hearts of men (and women) these days, I'd need him to tell me which people in the world (both of 'em) ain't waitin' around to do me in!

  • so where can i find this blue coal? and can i get high off of it?

  • the shadow knows...................

  • Love the Shadow. Gotta fix the left speaker tho.
