**Notes -
"Die Puppenfee" ("The Puppet Fairy" or "The Fairy Doll") was originally staged in 1888 by the Ballet Master Joseph Hassreiter to the music of Josef Bayer for the Court Opera Ballet in Vienna. In 1903 the brothers Nikolai & Sergei Legat - both of whom were leading danseurs in St. Petersbug - mounted a new version for the Imperial Ballet.
Riccardo Drigo composed new pieces for the production, including the pas seen here especially for Mathilde Kschessinskaya, who danced the title role in 1903. Drigo also wrote a dance for the french doll, as well as an extra solo for Kschessinskaya that is still performed on occasion by Kitri in the Mariinsky Ballet's "Don Quixote" during the dream scene). Today this pas is very popular on the gala & competition circuit.
Drigo's music is very neopolitan in its melody & orchestration, with the splendid adage - featuring two softly played trumpets - representing the moonstruck romance of the Pierrots. His pizzicato for the Fairy Doll is typical of the myriad of pizzicati he composed for the ballet, perfectly representing the charms of the Fairy Doll in musical terms. Fortunately the orchestra performs the music at its proper tempi.
