I know SarahB means.
It kills me that so often, as a kid, every summer I'd say to myself, "I should record an entire broadcast day." The idea was that I'd put them on a bunch of cassette tapes with old tape record our family had, capturing an entire weekday, 24 hrs, starting with NightFlight.
Did I ever do this? No, of course not. I was a stupid kid, and of course WJR would stay exactly the way it was, forever. I thought of it like the air I breathed. What a joy it all was.

It's comforting just to hear that relaxed voice again ... and that wonderful laugh.

@nichlusmanne Me too! I used to listen to JP every morning, from when I was 10 years old right up until he passed away. I'd LOVE to hear some of the programs from the early-mid70s, it's hard to believe nobody recorded any! I'd pay big bucks for just one day's broadcast, from JP's show to Warren Pierce and Jimmy Launce, then Focus and Patterns in Good Music. Late at night it was Night Flight, I remember being soothed to sleep listening to the airplane taking off. Nothing like it on radio today!

... what a flood of memories this brings back. His theme song runs through my head too. Remember when he had the alarm clock ring after the first few bars? Classic.... Thanks you ever so much for posting this. I'd give anything to get some old tapes of the show. Maybe one day WJR will release their old broadcasts.

I remember listening to this song almost in it's entirety before J.P. would walk into the studio and say, "Good Morning world and a very pleasant Thursday to you."
Great post. That's my Pap's, he WAS the man. And this theme song still runs through the brains of the McCarthy family, whenever I here it, It reminds me of being a child sitting in bed with the radio on and my mom saying, "Here comes your father, or sometimes, the theme would run a bit longer, and she'd say, "I told him he should not have stayed out so late! Great posting. Even his own family loves to see this stuff.

Thanks for posting. Reminds me of waking up with JP on WJR when I lived in Michigan. I listen to WJR on my Blackberry in K.C. where I now live. Paul W. does a splendid job, but JP was one of a kind. Rest in peace, JP. Rock on, Motor City !!!
