Launch of Explorer 1, First U.S. Satellite onboard a Jupiter C Rocket, which was a modified Redstone. The Redstone is what Alan Sheppard and Gus Grissom rode to orbit.

  • "Red Moon Rising" by Matthew Brzezinski is a fantastic book that talks about the political implications and world reactions and background regarding Sputnik and the early space race. Very very good book.

  • This is a great video. This first successful American launch putting a satellite into orbit took place before NASA was created. I am sure many baby boomers remember the excitement of the early space program and the difficult challenges our scientists and engineers had to overcome. Thanks for posting this gem!!
