The song is just your basic lesson about what happens when one thinks the grass on the other side looks greener. It's a lesson that still applies even today.

i love this song

The singer tells of some of the highlights of her life, but the tone is bittersweet and she wishes that someone had told her what she is telling the listener. She has learned what is important, but now it is too late. She finds her life hollow and without purpose, having lost her real self years before — the "me" she has never been to, is the life that she would have led if she hadn't been lured away by false ideas."

she is taking on chose a life of excitement and luxury over what was normal (i.e. settling down & having a child), which is the life of the housewife the singer is talking to; she says that she has been everywhere and has done everything the housewife might have done if she followed the singer's path, but now the singer realizes that those 'normal' things is what would have made her life meaningful.

I thought it was about a washed out, lonely, old sleaze who regrets having never settled down. Now she’s assuring a younger woman (who has settled down) that she wishes she hadn’t chosen the kind of life she led.
It’s kind of like 'The Happy Hooker' meets Caroline Ingalls, the mom from “Little House on the prairie."

Awesome.haunting song. I bought this on a 45RPM vinyl for my daughter. She loved it and that was about 33 years ago.

I have heard Charlene explain exactly what she was singing about, and it was as I stated. A song may mean totally different things to all who experienced that subjective time in one's life, but Charlene did explain her meaning. It's an awesome song and it means what 'you' want it to mean. However, Charlene states that she simply didn't realize what was 'really' important in this life. Thanks and Peace...
Thumbs up if you're still listening this in 2012 :)

I agree its not about abortion. It seems a tired housewife wanted to leave her husband and children to explore the world then there comes this single carefree girl who wants what she has, telling her life is not only about the adventure but about appreciating and loving herself "I have never been to me", How many of us have really explore who we are really?"
