French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday unveiled a new carbon tax to help combat global warming, calling it a "fiscal revolution" and overriding strong public opposition to the plan. The new levy on oil, gas and coal consumption by households and businesses will come into effect next year, making France the biggest economy yet to impose a straight-up carbon tax.  Duration: 01:48.

  • It's an easy decision to make because they are not going to be disadvantaged by switching away from coal fired power stations. This situation results from the French government's decision to invest in nuclear power in 1974 (after the 1973 oil crisis, which now accounts for 78% of France's energy production and explains why France pollutes less than comparable countries. It would be quite a different case in Australia which is totally reliant on coal at this stage.

  • wow..what a scam this is, like sarkozy and his EU and US gangsters really give a penny about the world or the climate. C,mon everyone can see all they care is about them and their families to be set for forever. They can careless about this world, us regular people, we are nobudy to them only taxpayers so the can get rich. If everyone stops buying, stop watching TV, only get necessities, we are going to collapse their fake empire they have built.
