Toy Manchester, Asher, demonstrates how to target a hand. This was taught using clicker training.

Hand Targeting can be used to help teach a dog how to "heel", or loose leash walking, can help teach a dog how to go on scales, invite them on the couch, invite them off the couch. It can also be used with a recall to have the dog come back wither in front of you or to your side. Hand Targeting can also be used to teach tricks like spinning in a circle, jumping up on cue, and helps give direction. It can also help a fearful dog allow handling from strangers by inviting the dog to touch them and them receiving a tasty reward.

Object targeting can help teach a dog "place" or to go to bed, and can help dogs overcome various fears of objects. It can also be used for various assistance tasks such as switching lights on or off, opening refrigerators, and is commonly used in animal acting. Further exercises include teaching retrievals, sending a dog away, and teaching tricks such as hand stands, leg lifts, staring at a specific object, and more!

There's a book called "Right on Target!" That you may want to check out for more info.

  • I'm a newbie...what is the purpose of "targeting a hand" training? Normally I wouldn't want this behavior in a companion animal.

  • Targeting a hand is useful for many things. You can get the dog to learn an array of tricks like spinning in a circle by following your hand, or jumping on cue. I teach it in my classes so owners can encourage dogs to go on scales, teach them how to heel (target hand by thigh) & to encourage fearful dogs to interact with strangers - they target a strangers hand, owner clicks &treats. I use object targeting to train dogs to go to bed, retrieve, back off & more. I recommend my other videos too.

  • Thanks! she's just 16 weeks old, and is learning fiicken fast! Her touches are good, and she's nailing the play bow as well, which will be posted soon! This video is just a guide for my clients as an aid and for others to view. Gotta love little Terriers.

  • how do i start training my dog "target a hand"?

and how much are Toy Manchester Terriers?

i really want to adopt one but it has to be under $200

  • is it possible that her short tail is a defect caused by being the runt? because her sisters were in there with her and their tails were fine, but she was the smallest one.

  • we bought a TMT the other day from a pet store and we get to bring her home tommorrow, her name is Nana, she is so small... she's missins some fur on the under side of her neck...is that normal?? they said it was just something normal to the breed but i just wanted to know. her tail is also quite a bit shorter than it should be, but it's not docked. she's beautiful and very sweet tho.

  • hello! was just wondering if that is an adult toy Manchester? if so, would you know how big a normal Manchester would grow? Is it knee high or just under the knees?

  • we have the same type of dog. rescued it fro ma shelter a couple years ago. ours knows this "targeting a hand" already

  • I aso have an adorable TMT, her name is Molly, I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for posting your video's.
