Welcome to one of the world's busiest commercial thoroughfares. Fasten your seatbelt as you ascend California Interstate 5's legendary Grapevine grade at a blistering 300 MPH (video simulation Mr. CHP officer, thanks for wondering). Try the full-screen, HD view for visual detail.

Home to wild weather, treacherous winds, blanket Tule fog, and overheated vehicles, ascents and descents are always full-attention grabbers, make no mistake about it.

The south-bound journey begins at the southern end of California's Central Valley in the In-N-Out Burger parking lot off Laval Road (slightly north of the ascent), and finishes over Tejon Pass summit, just past Gorman.

Note the high truck count and their occasional maximum-surprise lane changes.

Near Tejon Pass summit, the camera drifts to the slow lane to catch the elevation sign and almost catches a five-foot section of tire tread laying in the lane - narrowly missed by swerving right onto the roadway's shoulder at freeway speed.

The descent into Santa Clarita Valley is also spectacular, but that is another video.

Enjoy the golden July hills, laden with cattle, oil, and landslide benches - golden in the summer, green in the winter.

Finally, this great video has a good description of what the Grapevine is all about:

  • 300 MPH, my ass. Even speeded up this is nowhere NEAR 300MPH. Thumbs down...

  • @TrinityWilderness1 Well, I was doing the limit (60 or so) and the ascent is played at 5X speed. The math is fairly straightforward.

  • @deangmoxon Find me on the Web at InnovationSurvival and send an email. I'll see if I can find the song.

No, just kidding. I'm not a complete idiot.

  • If this is 300mph. then there sure are lots of cars passing you....LMAO

  • @Sami7685 - that in n out burger is ALWAYS a stop for me whenever i cross / prepare to cross the grapevine... i love that place

  • @innovationsurvival ...rofl r u srs

  • @innovationsurvival yeah thats the problem with videos that are fast forwarded. it doesnt show the blur that the human eye would see and the camera would catch. its only after you hit 75-80 miles per hour that a camera starts to fall behind.

  • Recently moved to Cali and drove the Grapevine for the first time this past weekend to camp up at Kings Canyon. Nice Vid.

  • @prettyTipsy we just had a recent snow fall in frazier like a week ago..craxy huh?

  • I'll be driving by the Grapevine this summer to get to my family in Sacramento. There are a few regular stops we used to take going from San Diego to Penn Valley, and this is one of them. Kinda nostalgic.

  • when we were on our way to disneyland... we were on the grapevine and it started to snow. We were lucky they didnt close it down. BTw it was Spring time!
