The Armed Forces flag was raised today (Monday 22 June) as HM Armed Forces-past, present and future, were honoured at a special outdoor ceremony by New Forest District Council to mark the first ever Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.
Council Chairman Cllr Les Puttock and Leader Cllr Barry Rickman were joined at the councils headquarters by New Forest councillors, MP Desmond Swayne, who is a Territorial Army officer, MP Julian Lewis, and representatives from 17 Port and Maritime Regiment, the Royal Navy, Reserve Forces and Cadets, Help for Heroes, the British Legion and others.
On behalf of Hampshire Lieutenancy, Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Sarah Locock presented the Armed Forces flag, which will fly at Appletree Court, Lyndhurst for the rest of the week. The Armed Forces flag will also fly at Lymington Town Hall.
NFDC joins councils across the country in flying the Armed Forces flag today. The purpose of Armed Forces Day is to honour the outstanding contribution made by current members of the Armed Forces and by veterans of all ages, and is a chance for the public to show their support and appreciation of all those who serve and have served HM Armed Services.
New Forest District Council has recently received recognition from SaBRE (Supporting Britains Reservists & Employers) for its commitment to supporting current and future employees in the Reserve Forces.
Council representatives will attend a formal presentation on board HMS Victory at Portsmouth later in the summer.
