Mumford and Sons play another new song, Timshel, live at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London on 4 March 2009.

This song, apparently written after falling into the sea at Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis , was performed at the ICA in almost total darkness. I have converted the video to black & white and brightened it up as much as is possible but it is still very dark! The sound is good, however, and the song is amazing. Hope you enjoy it!

Mumford and Sons release a limited edition 10" vinyl, The Cave and the Open Sea on Chess Club on 6 April 2009. Pre-ordering is strongly recommended!

  • I love the concept of performing this in total darkness, if where the inspiration came from is true, I love the performance throw back to it!

  • I love this song...brings tears to my eyes!!! <3<3<3

  • @92jc2005 It's a reference to Steinbeck's "East of Eden". Timshel is the hebrew word for "thou mayest" and it's a reference to the idea of free will as opposed to predestination.

  • this band is amazing!! the inspiration for this song is an great topic and so important.

  • @92jc2005 Genesis 4:7, apparently, or at least John Steinbeck's "East of Eden". Google "Timshel", pretty fascinating.

Great vid btw, of a lovely band.

  • @t1r2o3g4 where did the inspiration come from?

  • I am absolutely in love with them and their ridiculous talent. They were far and away the best show at Lolla and I am counting the days until their Halloween show in Chicago.
