Taekwondo disqualification surprises Taiwan competitor (2010/11/17)

Yang Shu-chun 楊淑君of Taiwan has been disqualified from the taekwondo competition at the Asian Games for wearing illegal socks. Yang, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, was disqualified even though the socks had been approved in a pre-bout inspection. Taiwanese taekwondo competitor Huang Hsien-yung 黃顯詠later went on to win gold in the under-46 class, and said she used her teammate's disqualification as motivation.

The competitor in red is Taiwan's Yang Shu-chun. In the first round of the under-49 kilogram division at the Asian Games in Guanzhou, Yang was leading her Vietnamese opponent Vu Thi Hau 9-0. With just 12 seconds to go in the round, judges decided to disqualify Yang and award victory to the Vietnamese girl.

As soon as the ruling was made, Yang's eyes began to well with tears.

The reason for Yang's disqualification was an additional sensor in her protective socks that are used to detect effective attacks and immediately register points scored electronically.

Voice of Tsai Jhih-kai
Electronic Sock Manufacturer
Yang Shu-chun's foot size is special. Her feet are size 22.5, so there were no new-style protective socks for her. We only had the old style to give her. Both the red and blue competitors must test the other's protective gear to confirm that they're in working order. After going through so many inspections, you shouldn't wait until the competition has started before challenging the gear worn by an opponent.

According to Asian Games regulations, competitors must provide their own protective gear. Yang was not wearing the latest model. By putting on an older type she was disqualified. Her disqualification extends to all competitions in this Asian Games.

Yang's coach Liu Yong-lung said that although Yang's socks differed from that of other competitors, they were a World Taekwondo Federation-certified brand. Additionally, they were inspected by games' officials before the bout, and Yang was cleared to wear them. The Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Association also said that all of the electronic gear used by Taiwanese athletes at the Asian Games was purchased from the World Taekwondo Federation in accordance with regulations.
