Up there in the mountains
Among woods and valleys of gold ...

Lassù per le montagne tra boschi d'oro e valli in fiore.
Al Ghicet di Sea (2750m, Valle di Balme, prov. TO),
sotto il cielo azzurro (come è bello il cielo di ... Balme quando è bello!).

La Montanara - In 1927, Toni Ortelli wrote the lyric set to music by Luigi Pigarelli: the song attained instant popularity that has lasted until today also in the German speaking regions of the Alps. Here we present three renderings: the German lyric sung by the Tölzer Knabenchor, a brilliant arrangement for orchestra and a curious rendering by an Italian pop group.

1 - Das Lied der Berge - Tölzer Knabenchor

La Montanara ohe
Die Berge, sie grüßen dich
Und durch die grünen Tannen
Bricht silbern das Licht.
La Montanara ohe
Im Klang alter Lieder
Laut hallt das Echo wieder
Nur du hörst es nicht.

2 - Andre Rieu (Arrang. per orchestra)

3 - Schola Cantorum (1978)

(T. Ortelli e L. Pigarelli, 1927)
Là su sui monti dai rivi d'argento
una capanna cosparsa di fior
era la piccola, dolce dimora
di Soreghina, la figlia del sole.

Là su per le montagne,
tra boschi e valli d'or,
fra l'aspre rupi echeggia
un canto d'amore. (r)

La montanara
si sente cantare,
Cantiam la montanara
e chi non la sa? (r)

Là su per le montagne,
tra boschi e valli d'or,
fra l'aspre rupi echeggia
un canto d'amore. (r)

Cantiam la montanara
e chi non la sa?

(English translation

Up there in the mountains
Among woods and valleys of gold
Among the rugged cliffs there echoes
A canticle of love.

La Montanara, ohe'!
You can hear sing,
We sing the Montanara
And who does not know it?

Up there in the mountains among banks of silver
A hut covered with flowers,
It was the sweet little dwelling-place
Of Soreghina, the daughter of the Sun. )

Dedicato agli amici Marisa, Flora e Luciano.
