What's Really Happening In Mexico? Day 1 - Part 11 CANCUN

All right! Theres nothing like the warm
tropical off shore breeze blowing over your
pasty-white body. Theres a reason we
Canadians flock to Mexico around this time
of year: Winter in our country is a season
of unrelenting, soul-crushing, wintry
brutality. And lets face it, an icy cold
Mexican lager or six doesnt hurt. And the
relationship between Canadians and their
favourite vacation destination has always
been a positive one. Weve come down to
here to unburden ourselves of our
work-a-day worries and woes, and the
big-hearted Mexicans have soothed our
frazzled minds and bodies with a walloping
dose of relaxation, warm hospitality, and
fun in the sun. But this year, things have
seemingly soured somewhat. Trips by
Canadians to Mexico have dropped by as much
as 50%! Sure, weve all seen the media
reports about the danger thats present in
Mexico; the travel advisories, the
well-intentioned warnings, the concerned
looks from friends and family. But whats
the real story? Whats really going on in
Mexico? We thought wed come down here and
find out for ourselves.
Our first day in the sunny south finds us in
Cancun, one of the worlds premier resort
destinations. Should we have packed
bulletproof vests, or would sunscreen and an
emergency stash of Imodium be enough? The
Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa were kind
enough to welcome us into their lovely hotel
for a couple of days. What a sweet hotel!
We woke up early, had an incredible
breakfast brought to our room, and set out
into the wilds of Cancun to see what kind
of trouble we could get into
After an exhaustive search through some of
the most popular hotels in Cancun, we have
to report that we have so far been
completely stumped in our search for danger.
I mean, everyone we talked to today was just
having a grand old time. Check out the
video clips of the interviews! No one has
been encountered any danger, or even
press-ganged into a wet t-shirt contest!
(well, the jury might still be out on that
last one) Although it was clear that
everything was on the up and up, it was also
clear that many of the people that we spoke
with had been seriously considering not
coming down, after hearing the media reports
and government warnings. How on earth could
so many intelligent, hard-working people
believe that they could be in danger in a
place that is thousands of kilometers away
from where the news reports of violence and
mayhem originated? To be honest, I dont
know. What I do know is that if there is a
threat, it sure isnt in Cancun! Well see
if the situation is different down the coast
in Playa del Carmen tomorrow. See you then!
