  • 13 years old, sitting in west side upper (posh or what)) with me now departed grandad. What a night. Pure mid week magic. Never to be forgotten. "I was there".

  • What a fantastic night.... only one that can come near it was the Ipswich play off game for atmosphere... many thanks for shoving this on..... * thumbs up *

  • I've been watching West Ham for 39 years and I have to say that was probably the best match under the lights at the Boleyn that I've ever had the privilege to witness.

  • I can only echo what people have said here. I was in the southbank and it was a truely fantastic atmosphere. I was 15 and soaked through and can remember the steam rising as a rare gap opened in the crowd. Had the long trek home to Welling afterwards through the woolwich tunnel but always worth it to see Trev at his best. Was that really 35 years ago!

  • I was wearing a trenchcoat (aged 15 - they were all the rage then) and was in the southbank as I always was. There wasn't a button left on that coat as the squeeze was so tight. As hombre says there were 42K there even though the records will show 38K - the turnstile men were always bent! The fans stayed for half an hour after the game and the announcement (from Bill Remphry - remember him?) was to go home!! We've never been appreciated as fans have we!!?

  • Trevor was inspirational that night. What a night, the best ever at Upton Park.. The daily Mirror wrote "at 7.20 the West Ham team ran out onto a sea of mud to a torrent of East End cheers" I plagiarised that line in a school essay some weeks later and won a prize for the essay. I am 50 this year and that night features heavily in my half century recap! Trevor and Billy were Gods.

  • I was in the South Bank with my old Dad and his brothers. Atmosphere you could bottle and Brooking inspiring the Hammers with his magic.

    What a night!

  • Great to see this after all these years, the greatest football match i ever saw at West ham.the floodlight atmosphere was simply amazing, mud bath of a pitch,42,000 in the ground, what a night, then dashed home to watch it on TV with the great Brian Moore comentating, ahh such wonderfull memories and my life time hero Trevor Brooking, simply wonderfull..

  • I agree, WONDERFUL night and the culmination of all Brooking had absorbed since his youth, MAGICAL and worth the entrance money on his own, Keith Robson had a fabulous left foot on him, brilliant team going forward

  • I was at this fabulous game. Trevor Brooking was as great a player as this country has ever seen. He would have made the Brazilian team if he was from that country. And I never understood why people were so surprised that he headed The FA Cup winning goal against Arsenal in 1980. I remembered this one. Great days indeed.
