Yes, he died in a plane crash because David Lewis was too ill to appear on camera. He got better, and Edward was resurrected.

How did they explain him coming back from the dead or that Laila heard him?

His body was never found, and Anna found him living in the Bahamas, hiding out from the group that tried to kill him. Lila's hearing him was explained as telepathy. (of course, why that telepathy didn't include him telling her that he was alive and well in the Bahamas...)
