i believe you, i grew up in NYC, so i was only speculating anyway. but in general,it was kind of a meme of it's time. it was not an expression that carried along through the years. and, it wasn't because it was crude by definition,as much as it just sounded silly to the ear. as fun as it it was to say,it was also a bit corny,juvenile,and slightly over the top. not a good phrase to use around the ladies,if one wanted to impress.
