I'm thinking about getting this one, mainly because It was the last great game on the system, and I kind of think that's vaguely cool, for some reason.

The new version of Snes9x (v1.51) doesn't have that problem anymore. As long as you have it set to Hi-Res (which is the default option).

Are you playing the game on the SNESx9 emulator? It actually has a problem with certain graphics in this game so some things (Such as the leaves and trees you mentioned) block your view far more than they should. I pressed 3 on the keyboard to get rid of the leaves and trees.
