I was surprised to see that Anne-Marie and Maryam didn't even once quote from the sources of Sharia, i.e. Qur'an and Sunnah, to establish their arguments. It was like saying: "Democracy is bad because look at what the USA does, look at what the UK does, look at what Israel does..." What the two ladies were saying was: "Sharia is bad, because look at what Saudi Arabia does, look at what Iran does, look at what Afghanistan does..." How very unacademic and unscholarly of them. Very unconvincing.

...Those who do not know much about Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I would recommend them to watch this video in which dignitaries of the world who know us well as a community talk about us:
/watch?v=lWVqtk_pkLI
Ahmadiyya Jamaat is not just talk talk, we by the grace of Allah always try to practice what we preach. May Allah enable us to continue to serve God and our fellow beings . Islam is all about Haqooqullah (service to Allah) and Haqooqul Ibad (service to mankind/human rights)

In the end you have human instincts and you have human principles, and both are always at war with one another; this, has gravity.

This debate at University College London, U.K., is more than 2 and a half hour long, but most crucial to watch if you claim you have an iota worth of care for human rights. Islam is part of the solution, by focusing your energy against it you are putting that much lesser energy on the real culprits: the hypocrites of our global society! If we want peace, those of us who want peace, have to work together... there is no other way!

When you formulate an opinion by honest investigation, then attach ego to it: you place upon yourself a seal that disables you to seek reason. This is same as blind faith devoid of rationality. Everyone needs a Nemesis, my English Professor said while teaching Shakespeare; the west had the Africans, the South Indians had "The Untouchables", older times had the "witches", a confused religious person has the devil, & there are so many more... today, we have Islam.

@ParadoxEternal : Here, the one physically abusing is the WOMAN abusing the MAN. This is a scenario which is not often talked about, but it is receiving increasing attention in certain countries, such as the UK. If the husband, for the sake of their children, starts defending himself, it can make the abusive wife pause and rethink her attitude. Divorce is the final step, and can be resorted to if all fails. This will be quite enough on this topic now, thank you for contributing.

@ParadoxEternal : I don't know what you imply. Those husbands who are being physically assaulted by their wives, have been allowed to lightly defend themselves physically against such abuse in this verse. But they also have the right to get divorced from them. However the meaning of "waDriboohunna" definitely means "and chastise them", it does not and cannot mean "and divorce them". That is a separate issue which no doubt exists, but not in this particular verse.

@ParadoxEternal : The word used in the Qur'an is NUSHOOZ which means a rebellious attitude that goes beyond all limits. It refers to the case of women who wilfully allow their husbands' property to be destroyed, who turn their children against them, who physically assault their husbands. After reasoning with such vicious women, then leaving them in their beds, if their evil behaviour continues such husbands have been allowed to lightly defend themselves against their violence.

@astroboomboy The veil is studied as an issue of culture now, not religion. Islam does not tell a woman to cover herself completely with black fabric in a 40 degree weather system. Islam does not tell women to cover themselves up to their eyes, as far as I know. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad teaches that if Islam is followed because of lack of personal devotion and experience, it is not Islam. It is a false practise to do something without having believed it yourself. There is no compulsion in Islam.
I think the point is, if sharia law were to be implemented in western culture, as it is in those extremist countries then it would be a violation of human rights. I don't have any doubt that you can twist the words of the qu'ran to support a peace only message, but that is obviously not what everyone is understanding upon reading it.That is an important and relevant fact that I think these women are trying to bring to light. If the book can be interpreted so many ways then who is right about it?

@MeepullStewray : You don't need to twist the words of the Qur'an to support a peace only message - you have to twist the words of the Qur'an to support violence. The Qur'an is all about maintaining peace, and it teaches self-defence, and prohibits offensive wars of any kind. It promotes freedom of religion and thought and protection of all places sacred to all faiths. It promotes dialogue. It severely condemns coercion and persecution. Any law can be misinterpreted by evil folk.
