From the largely ignored "Poppy Seeds" album, this song was the follow up to the smash hit "Which Way You Goin', Billy". In the USA this song only charted at #45, in Canada, the group's home territory, it made it all the way to #6.

Lyrics:

Where Evil Grows (T. Jacks / London Records / Carlin America, Inc)

I like the way you smile at me.
I felt the heat that enveloped me.
And what saw I liked to see.
I never knew...where evil grew.

I should have steered away from you.
My friend told me to keep clear of you.
But something drew me near to you.
I never knew...where evil grew.

Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun, it never shines.
Evil grows in cracks and holes
And lives in people's minds.

Evil grew, it's part of you.
And now it seems to be,
That everytime I look at you
Evil grows...in me.

If I could build a wall around you
I could control the things that you do.
But I couldn't kill the will within you
And it never shows
The place where evil grows.

Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun, it never shines.
Evil grows in cracks and holes
And lives in people's minds.

Evil grew, it's part of you.
And now it seems to be,
That everytime I look at you
Evil grows... in me.

  • Somehow, someway, this song found me. I've never been able to forget it, singing the chorus under the shower, hearing the guitar's parts in so many other songs, it followed me. Now I see this 70's people with strange hairdo's, awkward faces and luminiscent clothing and laugh at them, but man, this song, this song...

  • Wow! How about the intro from Kenny Rogers? From the New Christy Minstrels to the First Edition and beyond. Great stuff. Love the song. Still one of my favorites.

  • I was so blessed to grow up where we could listen to Canadian radio (AM 800 CKLW out of Windsor, Ontario). This is still one of my favorite songs of all time.
