Joan Baez a "commie"?? Your Dad wouldn't be an "American Dad" would he? Mistaking a Quaker for a Commie does take a particularly poor education!

I'm singing this carol with my SATB choir. There are two versions of the tune, very similar to each other. My "Carols for Choirs 1" book states at the top of the First Version - 'Original tune of 1591'. And the 2nd version as 'Modern version of tune arranged by Martin Shaw'. We're singing the latter. The 1st has 3 voice parts, the 2nd, 4 voice parts.
I've loved this song since singing it in Junior school!

I have an entire album of her singing Christmas songs produced by Peter Schickile (?) in about 1966. I have dozens of Christmas albums of all sorts and this one is the best.

I always think of Peter S. as PDQ Bach,,and I think he made the most beautiful music for this lovely voice, example, the sound track of Silent Running, among many. His orchestration for Turquoise is also perfect. Thanks for the comment.

This is a traditional English carol, commonly believed to have been first set down to music circa 1534 by a certain Peter Croo. It was part of the "Pageant of the Shearmen and the Tailors" performed in Coventry in around the 1500's, maybe the 1400's.
