Rufus May is a maverick psychologist. He believes there is no such thing as schizophrenia, that medication can destroy lives and that there's nothing wrong with hearing voices. Rufus is an authority on the subject. He was diagnosed with acute schizophrenia aged 18.




In this powerful and thought-provoking film, BAFTA-award winning director Leo Regan, takes a challenging look at how society deals with mental illness, using an innovative mix of contemporaneous documentary footage and dramatised scenes. To protect her anonymity, Ruth is played by BAFTA-nominated actress Ruth Wilson and some details have been changed.




With figures suggesting as many as one in four people suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives, the film prompts the question, how far can people who hear voices also continue to live a normal life?

I had a psychiatrist forced on me by the police some years back. He asked me if I heard voices and I told him I could hear his and it was one two many. Some weeks later I caught up with him and a social worker friend of his and hit them both quite hard. He's now trying to get my GP to gang up with him behind my back and have me sectioned. I'm a bad little mental patient you see. I can't stand the likes of either conventional psychiatrists or fake revolutionaries like Rufus.

Do you mean you physically hit them? Sounds like you've also had bad experiences with psychiatry and I'm sorry to hear that they're trying to have you sectioned. I think you should know more about what Rufus does and perhaps understand that he's not a fake revolutionary, he probably wouldn't say he's a revolutionary at all but he is tring to change a system based on false premises of mental 'illness' and forced sectioning of people who need support rather than drugs or ECT.

Real medical symptoms are either histopathological or pathphysiological. Claiming to hear voices are neither. Both Rufus and this psychiatrist are making a living out of this same illusion as both have no compunction in asserting that the voices are real.

You need to re-evaulate what reality is...perhaps watch the matrix or read some good philosophy books (start with existentialism!).

I'll give you a start: reality is what a person perceives it to be. My reality is different from yours and I wouldn't try to deny your reality as this would undermine you as a person.

@scumgod13 I know two female doctors that also look too young to be a doctor, but they are, some people are 25, 27 or over 30 and people can't see their age.

I'm so glad to be out of the psych wards,they never did me any good.I am still severely anorexic,I still hallucinate,self harm,depression,OCD,agoraphobi­a and severe PTSD(all these issues were caused by a life time of rape,abuse and going through FGM at 12 years old),but I feel it's better for me to be at home and with my parents,who love me and care for me.Being locked away in the hospital was torture,the way many patients are treated in psych wards is unbelievable.

After ten years and a lengthy court battle (my parents fought for years to get me out of there) I was finally let out, but was in even worse shape by then, than when I was first admitted in there. I got no help from being in there at all. Nowadays, I am living on in-home hospice care (I'm terminally ill, I have both physical and mental issues, the physical issues are a result of severe anorexia nervosa causing multi-organ failure, along with many other health issues)

In there I was restrained and injected with potent anti-psychotics, tranquillizers and various other meds I didn't want to take. I was forced into a medical coma and was force fed via NG tubes, PEG tubes and Groshong lines. I ended up with permanent brain damage from being given unsafe doses of some meds. I was also sexually and physically abused by staff in the hospital, they never were caught, as no one believes the mentally ill over the words of the staff.

I may be reading what you wrote wrong, but sections/forms exist already in the USA and Canada. You can be hospitalized against your will if deemed unsafe to yourself or others. I am in Canada, and have been sectioned many times, my longest stay in a psychiatric lock up ward being ten years (from age 13 - 23).

Do you have dreams?

Do you have dreams where you have characters (human or not) that speak to you?

Rufus maintains that these voices you have in dreams are no different.

Do you practice lucid dreaming?

Probably not, because if you did, you'd immediately see the sharp parallel to the irrationale of schizo voices and that of dream-characters dialogue.
