For the offertory on All Saints' Day 2006, the choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church (K Street) in Washington, D.C. sang Edgar Bainton's "And I Saw a New Heaven." You can also see the clergy incensing the altar in traditional high church style. As usual, I recorded this for the music whilst surreptitiously recording, so the visuals aren't great.

  • That music was beautiful!

Hopefully, my own Roman Catholic Church can undergo the same dramatic transformation that the Oxford Movement had on Anglicanism. Then, this type of music will be a staple of Holy Mass once again!

  • There are many things about the Anglican tradition that make me proud. Our ability to escape rigid dogma is one. Our refusal to retreat from intellectual honesty is another. This won't work for many people -they're looking for a crutch, not a real search for what W. James called "the ultimate reality of the universe". I'm amazed that in the midst of doctrinal disputes the huge majority of us refuse to stop evolving. Religion evolves or it dies. We are no longer in the 18th century.

  • I agree. I am Roman Catholic as well. For the Holy Mass I like choir and organ. None of this "praise band" business. Not holy and reverent for me.

  • Should be Mark Dwyer conducting if the date of this video is accurate.

  • Why? I doubt you'd say that if you lived in the 18th century when the Anglican Church was as expressly Protestant as a respectable Calvinist sect.

  • Looks like Geoff Smith there directing, but thought he had moved on....

  • I Love St. Paul's, K Street! I lived in DC for about 7 years before moving to Phoenix. I frequently attended Evensong there . . . especially on the High Holy Days! No secret to anyone in DC . . . there are more Roman Clergy in the pews at evensong than Anglicans! HAHA

  • That is truely amazing and just breath taking. It's divine

  • Beautiful.

  • He's headed to the Church of the Advent in Boston now.
