Five songs comprise the Op. 48 Lieder of Richard Strauss. The first, "Freundliche Vision", whose text describes an experience merging love and nature which is so intense as to seem dream-induced, penetrates the chromatic post-Tristan world, one which would reach fruition in "Salome" and "Elektra"; the floating vocal melody seems detached from the weighty accompaniment, as though taking leave of reality. ~ All Music Guide
Freundliche Vision
Nicht im Schlafe hab' ich das geträumt,
Hell am Tage sah ich's schön vor mir:
Eine Wiese voller Margeritten;
Tief ein weißes Haus in grünen Büschen;
Otto Julius Bierbaum (1865-1910)
A pleasant vision
I did not dream this while asleep;
I saw it fair before me in the light of day:
A meadow full of daisies,
a white house deep in green bushes,
images of gods gleaming from the leaves.
And I walk with one who loves me,
in a peaceful mood in the coolness
of this white house, in which peace
awaits our arrival, full of beauty.
Translation: Emily Ezust
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone)
Gerald Moore (piano)

Having trouble commenting again, Barb? I only see it once. I'm glad I found that painting. Perfect for the house that's mentioned. Glad I could introduce you to this lovely song.

Beautiful! Fischer-Dieskau's clear tonality at its best, with Gerald Moore's as always superb accompaniment. Very appropriately chosen pictures and a good translation into English. Thank you for posting.
