Using IIII instead of IV on clocks is a tradition that goes back to the famous 14th century clock of Wells Cathedral, England. IIII as a replacement for IV was fairly common in manuscripts at the time, although today it's rare to see in writing. On clack faces the convention rose steadily in popularity for a few centuries and at a time was prominent in all countries that use Roman numerals. Clocks with IIII are still common today in Western Europe because it evokes the image of an antique.

So far I've seen both IIII and IV on clocks. Personally I prefer IV but it's not that difficult to see where they got IIII from.

@GalufTheInvincible Actually, 'IIII' doesn't exist in Roman numerals. IV is the correct way to write '4', like he said in the video.
