About P. Sainath

Palagummi Sainath (1957-), the 2007 winner of the Ramon Magsaysay award for journalism, literature, and creative communications arts, is an award winning Indian development journalist - a term he himself avoids, instead preferring to call himself a 'rural reporter' or simply 'reporter' - and photojournalist focusing on social problems, rural affairs, poverty and the aftermaths of Globalization in India. He spends between 270 and 300 days a year in the rural interior (in 2006, over 300 days) and has done so for the past 14 years. He is the Rural Affairs Editor for The Hindu, and contributes his columns to India Together, where they are archived. His work has won praise from the likes of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen who referred him as "one of the world's great experts on famine and hunger".

  • If the performance of India for 5 decades + this 5 yrs are of any reference to go by, NDA govt was indeed a golden period of cleaning the mess created by congress.

  • Depends upon "golden period" for who? May be top two percent of India.

  • I think P. Sainath is making all great relevant points. I do not think that he is pessimistic, he is uttering the truth and many of the people cannot digest truth. He is not a hypocrite, I think most of us are hypocrites!! And the Indian media is a big bitch, just like the US media. Face it guys. India shining is an illusion. It doesn't matter whether a country is shining or not until all its people live in harmony with each other as truly helpful, social human beings.

  • To kashsoldier: I do not think you understand what is trying to say at all. You get 0/10 marks- and a F grade. Please clear your basics and post back sensibly.

  • why is this video being supported by Finnish media company, Finnish external affairs and Finnsh embassy?? Can somebody name a world class news paper from Finland??

  • indian poverty is very pathetic and wht common public can do, it is very pathetic,,

  • india is exploding because of wrong policies,,india is going bankrupt,and60 crore is going to die because they have not educated,,

  • 3 Billion humans earn less than $2aday, half the world has no toilet access.50%of the worlds money belongs to 500 humans. There will be poverty as long as workers are not given the control and ownership over their production. As long as Corporate owners Board Members capitalist bosses autocratically manage the distribution of production and profits, workers in all countries will be extorted of how much capital their labor actually produces.Long Live Socialist☭ Revolution!

  • @martiantourist I agree with you ... but the context of this video is to check the Media .. Plzz look at the high point - "70% of teh population dont make up to have anything relevant for teh news"

  • @martiantourist fuck off you ignorant idiot, NDA directly messed up education by putting brainwashing hindutva stuff and blatant historical lies in fucking school textbooks. It created the worst market for poor people and farmers, it suppressed free flow of information and ran forced advertisements glorifying itself on TV. Learn a few things before you spew some shit out of your sewer-mouth

  • THEIR ARE VERY FEW GOOD JOURNALIST IN SOUTH ASIA ONE BEING NAZAM SETHI FROM PAKISTAN AND P SAINATH FROM INDIA.

    REST ARE BOLLYWOOD ITEM NUMBERS.

  • were is accountabality and ethics look what happen to murdoch and its cronies shut for ever and ndtv and barkha dutt are still alive.

INDIA IS DEMOCRACY IN NAME ONLY NOT LIKE WEST.

  • He speaks the truth and his bluntness hurts.... what are the young (educated) politicians doing? What is the media doing? Responsible news channels should have people like him on the panels rather than the same, biased, ineffective jokers? I appreciate NDTV for having aired the documentary covering the Vidharba farmers... but how come I have not seen ANY debate which included Mr. Sainath? Has he been included in the award winning "we the people" His no nonsense talk gets staight to your heart
