March break 2011, we traced the steps of the San Francisco Marathon more or less. This is a guide for someone looking to do a long run (32km or 20 miles) while visiting San Francisco to get a general idea of the race.
We did an "out and back" from Pier 29 along the Embarcadero, under the Golden Gate Bridge, through the Presidio, then south to a quiet 12th street and into Golden Gate park where we turned around a retraced out steps.
The course actually crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and also heads downtown towards the finish line from Golden Gate Park. On race day it would be a much different scenario than dealing with constant fast moving traffic and traffic lights, this route makes about the best possible simulation of the course for practice.
Surfers were out under the bridge that day and we stopped to watch.
